The (partly) overlooked danger of confirming the Covid lab leak hypothesis

Reposted in May 2021 the first serious evidence in favor of the lab leak theory:

The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists: Covid-19 may have originated in a Wuhan lab

Being a less talented nerd somewhat in the tradition of Henry Cavendish I just tell the truth (as I see it) no matter the political consequences, though have little or no personal desire to spread hazardous info far and wide, partly because I have had my share of media attention in the 1990s and felt the emptiness of it. But will of course continue to share arguments for and against the Wuhan lab leak hypothesis. Here is new info from The Intercept:

FOX News refers to Rutgers University chemical biology professor Richard Ebright who wrote this about the documents revealed by The Intercept:

“The documents make it clear that assertions by the NIH Director, Francis Collins, and the NIAID Director, Anthony Fauci, that the NIH did not support gain-of-function research or potential pandemic pathogen enhancement at WIV are untruthful.”

Tim Pool has a presentation of the case here:

New Report PROVES Fauci Committed Perjury, Rand Paul Proven Right About Gain of Function Research

That gain-of-function research occurred in Wuhan is not in itself evidence that SARS-CoV-2 leaked from a lab, but when it’s all over the news that US documents show that risky virus research happened prior to the discovery of Covid-19 in Wuhan it sends a message to everybody, including microbiologists, that 1) viruses in this category of lethality can destroy the economies of ultra-liberal polluting bellicose “democracies” in the West, and 2) it’s a high probability that any reasonably skilled microbiologist can eventually design a similar virus if he or she really wants to become a bioterrorist, as explained here:

Old microbiologist having a bad day … or just having an utilitarian conviction

The more it becomes clear that a pandemic was actually the result of a designer virus the more it proves to any politically extreme microbiologist that a new manmade pandemic, this time leaked deliberately, can change the world (in a more environmentally friendly direction for example).

It’s one thing to intellectually know that a designer virus may change globalized societies. It’s much more convincing when you see it with your own eyes that such a virus, accidentally leaked from a lab, have in fact changed the world. It’s the best “proof of concept”. If it has happened once, it can happen again, but this time deliberately, if a trained microbiologist is coldly utilitarian enough to do it.

Red teaming possible future scenarios of dread is interesting if you are fascinated by research on black swan events. That’s my main motive for writing about this topic, even when it’s impossible not to see that it serves cultural conservatism – my own ideology – if a new pandemic triggers chaos which (partly) destroys the fourth industrial revolution before the latter becomes too strong after 2025 or 2030. But intelligence agencies are at least aware of this threat now. Will they do enough to reduce the risks I describe here? Have no idea. Now that humanity is facing many threats, not only (manmade) pandemics, will corporate and political leaders make Western societies more anti-fragile by dropping wokeness and returning to moderate liberality and moderate cultural conservatism? I doubt it. Take it almost for granted that the culture war is so tribal or entrenched among libertine woke globalists and (moderate) nationalists that nothing I say or write can change anything. Therefore just sit back fatalistically and observe the “pre-determined” social physics of it all. It’s almost like watching two avalanches heading toward each other but without knowing if they will crash head-on at the bottom of a valley. It’s the political version of Discovery Channel. Puppets on strings. Trapped and moved around by the security dilemma for example.
