Canada expands terrorism definition to justify surveillance

CNN reports:

Canada will list the Proud Boys movement as a terrorist group

First they came for the Proud Boys, then they came for the Orthodox Jews.

Je Suis Proud Boy

I’m not a member of the Proud Boys. Partly because I’m too unclassifiable to belong to either the Left or the Right. For example, I’m a feminist, an environmentalist. I’m also an indigenist, supporting all indigenous groups all over the world, from the Sami people to Native Americans. My unassessed Dr Philos thesis, recommended by five respected professors in Norway but suppressed by the so-called “liberal” Establishment, is very basically about taking money from billionaires and giving it to the poor in developing countries, in Africa, Latin-America, Asia. There is no contradiction between supporting international economic justice and defending your own national culture.

It’s very hypocritical indeed when European elites in Canada occupy the land of Native Americans and then define populist street rioters as terrorists, thereby putting them in the same category as ISIS and al-Qaida, especially when the storming of the US Capitol would not have happened if the Black and Democrat mayor of Washington DC had followed normal procedures and deployed enough riot police to easily prevent unlawful entry to the Capitol.

As CNN reports:

Inside the fight for the Capitol: US Capitol Police officers recount being unprepared and ‘betrayed’

If any building is the target of a large street protest and the police leaves it almost unguarded it’s very predictable that any mob will attack it. This is true of all mobs, both left- and rightwing. It doesn’t mean that even organized elements within the mob are terrorists when seeing an unexpected opportunity to attack the building because of surprisingly poor security.

Feb. 4, 2021, The New York Times writes this about the US Capitol riot on the 6th of Jan that year:

“11 have been charged with conspiracy so far.” (…)

“Prosecutors have said some of the people involved in the riot could face charges of seditious conspiracy, which requires proof that rioters planned to use force to oppose the authority of the United States government or to hinder the execution of its laws. Such cases are complex because they require evidence not only of planning but also intent, and no such charges have yet been filed.”

Arrested in Capitol Riot: Organized Militants and a Horde of Radicals

The New York Times writes Jan. 29, 2021 (updated Feb. 3, 2021):

“But unlike the Oath Keepers indictment, the one brought against [Proud Boys] Mr. Pezzola, 43, and Mr. Pepe, 31, describes only a two-person conspiracy that lasted only through the day of the rally when, it notes, a large group of Proud Boys traveled to Washington and gathered near the Capitol grounds.”

Proud Boys Charged With Conspiracy in Capitol Riot

Through many decades there have been many leftwing street battles in front of embassies, government buildings and corporate headquarters. If the police had not stopped the rioters they would of course have stormed the buildings and probably attacked people inside them. Many of the rioters could then have easily been charged with “conspiracy” because they came prepared to fight and had planned the riot. Attacking riot police is illegal, and arguably very stupid and pointless, but it’s Orwellian newspeak to claim that a street riot is terrorism.

After Canada declared that Proud Boys are terrorists, without evidence so far, the danger is that authorities will interpret new evidence in the most negative way possible, in order to fit the terrorist narrative.

It’s just semantics to claim that Canada didn’t expand the definition of terrorism.

Canada is implementing what you may call Patriot Act 2.0. In one way it’s more authoritarian than the first Patriot Act because it means that all street rioters, including Antifa, can be defined as “terrorists”, justifying draconian surveillance against them.

ACLU writes this about the Patriot Act:

“The definition of domestic terrorism is broad enough to encompass the activities of several prominent activist campaigns and organizations. Greenpeace, Operation Rescue, Vieques Island and WTO protesters and the Environmental Liberation Front have all recently engaged in activities that could subject them to being investigated as engaging in domestic terrorism.”

In one way, it’s kind of “ironic” or “karma” that a radical rightwing group is today becoming victim of exaggerated anti-terrorist measures first implemented by George W Bush, a rightwing corporate president, a “republican in name only”. True republicans, in the brave tradition of Hannah Arendt, must stand up to this.

Canada is part of the Five Eyes surveillance initiative. I speculate that Canada defined the Proud Boys as terrorists in order to more easily collect data on PB and then give this information to NSA etc.

Mass media, often owned by the corporate elite, can smear Proud Boys by writing articles containing sentences such as: “Proud Boys, a group defined as a terrorist organization by Canada…” This sets a very dangerous precedent. If a rightwing government gets power, it can define Antifa as terrorists.

When a government incorrectly claims that a political group/movement is a terrorist organization, it increases the risk that some members who are falsely branded in this manner will think that: “since I’m already defined as a terrorist, and sanctioned for it, I may as well act as one”. Consequently, if a person associated with the Proud Boys commits an act of terrorism in the future, the tricky government in Canada will say: “we told you they were terrorists”. Yeah, right… It’s evil manipulation to stigmatize someone as a terrorist before he/she has actually planned or committed an act of terrorism.

One of the major characteristics of authoritarian regimes is an expanded definition of terrorism used to oppress dissidents labelled “evil enemies of the state”.

What we are seeing now is the true authoritarian face of the CorpState in Canada: a democracy which has been partly corrupted by a rich elite in a state where there is a revolving door between Big Business and Big Government. Stop this fascistoid and neoliberal corporate elite which the last decades have occupied constitutional democracies in the West, cf The Shock Doctrine by Naomi Klein.

The corporate elite plays “divide and conquer” by encouraging an increased divide between leftwing populists and rightwing populists. Don’t be fooled by this tactic. It’s one of the oldest tricks in the authoritarian book of Machiavellians.

For more information read this article from Glenn Greenwald, the Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist who helped Edward Snowden:

The New Domestic War on Terror is Coming

We must all fight real terrorism and return to genuine constitutional democracies based on moderate liberality and moderate conservatism, in the traditions of John Stuart Mill and Edmund Burke. This was how we lived prior to corporate neo-“liberalism”, 9/11 and the rise of Big Tech.
